OVAL helps members find their optimal heart rate zone for efficient fat burning with SMART Zone™ (Sustained Mitochondrial Aerobic Respiration Training). Training in the SMART Zone™ allows members to use stored body fat as the primary fuel source rather than carbohydrates and helps train their mitochondria to be more efficient and resilient at higher intensity levels. This specific heart rate range maximizes fat oxidation, as illustrated in Figure 1.

In addition to the SMART Zone™, OVAL identifies personalized heart rate training zones for medium and high-intensity interval training (MIIT and HIIT). Our members receive guided interval workouts through our app, tailored to their specific metabolic profiles. By leveraging these personalized insights, members can optimize their training, enhance their performance, and achieve their health goals effectively.

OVAL’s MetFlex Index™ (MFI) quantifies metabolic flexibility by providing a score that reflects the ease of movement between energy sources (fats and carbs) depending on physiological demand. The higher the score, the better the metabolic flexibility, indicating a more efficient and adaptable energy utilization system in the body. Ideally, we aim for members to achieve a MetFlex Index™ score of 40 or above. This score indicates a solid foundation of health, with more efficient and healthy mitochondria at the cellular level. Reaching a score of 40 or above can significantly reduce the risk of metabolic syndromes. Additionally, members managing metabolic conditions with medication may find they can reduce their dosage or even discontinue medication. Training in the SMART Zone™ enhances mitochondrial efficiency and resilience, improving the body's ability to convert stored body fat into energy, even at higher intensity levels.
